The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) is the high Pamirs of eastern Tajikistan. A tourist or business e-Visa does not cover this region on its own. You add a single-entry GBAO permit on the same application.
Where the permit is required
- Khorog, the regional capital
- The Pamir Highway (M41) once it enters GBAO, usually around Darvoz
- The Wakhan Valley, Ishkoshim, Rushon, Vanj and Murghob
- Karakul and the high plateau toward the Kyzyl-Art pass
Where a normal e-Visa is enough
Dushanbe, Khujand, Penjikent, Istaravshan, Hissar, Varzob, the Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul sit outside GBAO. You can visit those places without the extra permit.
Practical notes
- Tajik missions publish the permit fee as USD 20
- Enter GBAO on the date printed on the permit
- The permit is single entry — leaving the region uses that entry
- Carry the e-Visa and the permit together with the same passport
- June to September is generally the most practical window for the Pamir Highway
Read the full GBAO zone page before you book a Pamir route.
FAQs: GBAO Permit & Pamir Highway Guide for Tajikistan e-Visa Holders
Do I need a GBAO permit for Iskanderkul?
No. Iskanderkul and the Fann Mountains are outside GBAO. You need the permit for Khorog, the Wakhan Valley, Murghob and the Pamir Highway inside Gorno-Badakhshan.
Is the GBAO permit a separate visa?
No. It is a single-entry travel permit added to a tourist or business e-Visa. Visa-exempt travellers still need the permit for GBAO.
