Passing through Tajikistan
No e-Visa is required if you stay inside the international transit area. If you pass immigration, you are entering Tajikistan and you need permission to do so. This website assists with the tourist e-Visa and the business e-Visa. It does not issue a separate transit e-Visa.
This website is a private application-assistance service. It is not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it is not endorsed by the Government of Tajikistan.
What transit means
Transit is a stop in Tajikistan on the way to another country. The rule depends on whether you remain airside or you enter the country.
- Airside — You stay in the international transit area between flights. You do not pass immigration.
- Entry — You pass immigration, leave the airport, change airports, or collect baggage and enter Tajikistan.
The e-Visa on this website is for a short tourism or business visit of up to 60 days. It is not a separate transit category.
Staying in the transit area
You do not need an e-Visa if you will not leave the international transit area. Remain in the airside zone until your onward flight.
- Do not pass the immigration desk.
- Do not collect baggage that requires you to enter Tajikistan.
- Keep your onward boarding pass and the passport you are traveling on.
- Confirm with the airline that your connection is inside the transit area. Some tickets are sold as one journey but require you to enter the country.
Airline and airport procedures can still require a visa for certain nationalities even for a short airside wait. Check that with your airline before you travel.
When you pass immigration
Leaving the transit area is an entry into Tajikistan. Apply before you travel, while you are still outside the country.
- A connection that sends you through immigration.
- An overnight stay outside the airport.
- A change of airport.
- Baggage that you can collect only after you enter.
Use the same passport for the application and at the border. The e-Visa is valid for 90 days, the stay is up to 60 days, and you must leave before the visa expires. Apply about two weeks ahead.
Tourist or business
Choose the e-Visa that matches what you will do after you enter. Each traveler needs their own passport and their own e-Visa.
| Your stop | What to use |
|---|---|
| You stay airside | No e-Visa, if you do not leave the international transit area. |
| Sightseeing or a family visit | Tourist e-Visa. Stay up to 60 days. |
| Meetings or short commercial travel | Business e-Visa. It does not authorize employment. |
| Work, study, or a longer stay | A visa from a Tajik mission. |
| The Pamirs (GBAO) | The tourist or business e-Visa, plus a separate single-entry GBAO permit. |
If you enter, your passport should remain valid for at least six months after the visa you request, and for at least six months from the date you intend to enter, with at least two blank pages.
Airports
The airside rule is about the international transit area. If you hold an e-Visa and you do enter, you may use all border points.
- Dushanbe International Airport
- Khujand International Airport
- Other border points, once you have entered on an approved e-Visa
Carry a digital or printed copy of the approval with the same passport if you pass immigration. The border points list names the crossings used for entry.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers on transit through Tajikistan.
Do I need an e-Visa to transit through Tajikistan?
No, if you stay inside the international transit area and do not pass immigration. You need a visa if you leave that area, collect baggage and enter Tajikistan, change airports, or stay outside the airport.
Is there a Tajikistan transit e-Visa on this website?
No. This website assists with the tourist e-Visa and the business e-Visa. Both are for a short visit of up to 60 days. A purpose that does not fit tourism or business needs a visa from a Tajik mission.
Which visa do I use if I leave the transit area?
Use the tourist e-Visa for sightseeing or a family visit, and the business e-Visa for meetings or other short commercial travel. Apply only while you are outside Tajikistan. Employment or a longer stay needs a visa from a Tajik mission.
How long can I stay if I enter Tajikistan?
A tourist or business e-Visa allows a stay of up to 60 days. The visa is valid for 90 days, and you must enter within that period. Leave before the stay and the visa expire.
Which airports does this apply to?
The international transit rule applies when you remain airside. E-Visa holders who do enter Tajikistan may use all border points, including Dushanbe International Airport and Khujand International Airport.
What if my connection means I must pass immigration?
Treat that stop as an entry. Apply for the tourist or business e-Visa before you travel, about two weeks ahead, while you are still outside Tajikistan. Carry the same passport named on the visa.
Do I need a GBAO permit for a transit stop?
No, if you stay in the international transit area. If the trip enters the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, request the separate single-entry GBAO permit with the tourist or business e-Visa.
Can I use the e-Visa only for the hours between flights?
Yes, if you must pass immigration. The e-Visa still follows the tourism or business rules: up to 60 days, and you leave before it expires. Staying airside does not use an e-Visa.
